1: The development of COBOL (1959)

There are many languages out there, but none has influenced as many others as COBOL has. What makes COBOL stand out is the fact that there are still machines chugging along, running COBOL apps. Yes, these apps could (and possibly should) be rewritten to a modern standard. But for many IT administrators, those who don’t have the time or resources to rewrite legacy apps, those programs can keep on keeping on.

2: The development of the ARPANET (1969)

It is an undeniable fact that the ARPANET was the predecessor of the modern Internet. The ARPANET began in a series of memos, written by J.C. R. Licklider and initially referred to as the “Intergalactic Computer Network.” Without the development of the ARPANET, the landscape of IT would be drastically different.

3: The creation of UNIX (1970)

Although many would argue that Windows is the most important operating system ever created, UNIX should hold that title. UNIX started as a project between MIT and AT&T Bell Labs. The biggest initial difference (and most important distinction) was that it was the first operating system to allow more than one user to log in at a time. Thus was born the multi-user environment. Note: 1970 marks the date the name “UNIX” was applied.

4: The first “clamshell” laptop (1979)

William Moggridge, working for GRID Systems Corporation, designed the Compass Computer, which finally entered the market in 1991. Tandy quickly purchased GRID (because of 20 significant patents it held) but then turned around and resold GRID to AST, retaining the rights to the patents.

Really, all I should need to say here is one word: iPod. Had Jobs not come back to Apple, the iPod most likely would never have been brought to life. File sharing. No matter where you stand on the legality of this issue, you can’t deny the importance of P2P file sharing. Without Napster, file sharing would have taken a much different shape. COBOL - 50th birthday

COBOL celebrated its 50th birthday on September 18, 2009. Many developers see COBOL as a relic, a dying dinosaur, or a stodgy language that has been superseded by more powerful systems. I believe that viewpoint as being uninformed. In honor of COBOL’s 50th birthday, here’s an overview of COBOL’s history and place in the current development landscape.

COBOL’s origins

COBOL was designed by the late, great Grace Hopper. Ms. Hopper had an extraordinary influence on the computing industry, including writing the first compiler, the “A compiler.” In addition, she served in the U.S. Navy, eventually attaining the impressive rank of rear admiral; there is even a U.S. Navy destroyer named after her in honor of her service.

COBOL was designed by committee, including representatives from the three government agencies and six major companies. The initial seed was planted in April 1959. On September 18, 1959, the committee picked “COBOL” for the name, and by the end of 1960, COBOL compilers had been completed and working programs had been made.

COBOL is an interesting language. Originally, it did not have many of the features that we have come to rely upon. For instance, you would not expect to find object oriented capabilities in 1959, but there were not even local variables then. The structure of a COBOL program is also different from what you would expect, being divided into different “divisions,” each of which serving a particular purpose. COBOL is best known for batch processing, in which large amounts of data are fed in and acted upon on a regular basis. In recent years, COBOL has undergone many changes and adapted to the needs of modern programmers, including adding object-oriented programming capabilities.

World's fastest 128GB USB flash drive

Corsair has launched 128GB Flash Voyager GT pen drive. Corsair claims that this is the fastest 128GB USB flash drive and is able to achieve read speeds of up to 32MB/sec and write speeds of up to 25.6MB/sec. This USB drive is based on dual-controller architecture to achieve single -level cell (SLC) NAND flash memory performance levels using less expensive and higher-density multilevel cell (MLC) NAND flash.

 

Corsair says that the only factor limiting the speed of this USB drive is the speed of the USB 2.0 bus. Youngsters to lead India's tech revolution

Saying that the U.S. needs to wake up to the reality of India's technological revolution being led by IIT-educated "young men and women under the age of 27", President Barack Obama's nominee for deputy commerce secretary said countries like India, China, Brazil and Russia were going to pose a major challenge to American dominance in the coming years.

"Today, we find ourselves competing not only with companies of great capacity, but countries intent on establishing dominance in the growth areas of the 21st century," Dennis Hightower, Obama's nominee for deputy secretary of commerce, said at his confirmation hearing Wednesday.

"Countries such as Brazil, Russia, India and China -- often referred to as the BRIC countries -- are now employing aggressive industrial policies reminiscent of Japan's strategic commitment to the electronics industry in the 1960s," he said.

Referring to his recent business travels in India, Hightower said he was "floored by that country's commitment to reinvesting in technology and the implications for the United States".

Visiting "a veritable who's who of global technology giants" in Bangalore, the would-be Obama official said he "was struck not only by the technological inroads being made in newly designed, avant-garde factories and laboratories, but also by the fact that this technological revolution was often being led by young men and women under the age of 27.

"By and large, these young people were not educated in the United States like many of their fathers -- at MIT, Cal Tech, or Rennselaer, for example -- but at the Indian Institutes of Technology."

Hightower noted there are "projections that place the United States in fourth place over the next 15-20 years in terms of consumerism, manufacturing capacity, and the growth of an entrepreneurial base that keeps pace with new global developments and delivery systems."

"This forecasted outcome, to my way of thinking, is unacceptable," he said stressing "we must re-establish the primacy of the United States as the world leader in innovation, creativity and excellence across the global economic spectrum.

"If America expects to lead, we must put our best minds on the toughest problems -- reforming the way America uses healthcare, consumes energy and educates our children," Hightower said.

"America must now act with a renewed sense of urgency" he said, as "our global competitors are neither standing still nor shy about taking action to exert their global economic ambitions".

Hackers crash Facebook and Twitter

Facebook and Twitter were attacked by hackers with denial-of-service attack on August 6. In a denial-of-service attack a Web site or server is bombarded with more traffic than it can handle, effectively causing online congestion. Such attacks are done from multiple computers and usually hackers send malware data to the target site in unison. After initial denial of any such attack, both Facebook and Twitter have now acknowledged attack on their site by denial-of-service attack.

In a blog hosted on an unaffected server, Twitter Co-Founder Biz Stone acknowledged the attack. "Attacks such as this are malicious efforts orchestrated to disrupt and make unavailable services such as online banks, credit card payment gateways, and in this case, Twitter for intended customers or users. We are defending against this attack now and will continue to update our status blog as we continue to defend and later investigate," he added.

Twitter had declared their scaling problems in early 2007. And as much as the great Twitter outages of 2007 and 2008 frustrated users, these outages are much more serious. Twitter has come a long way since 2007 as 45 million people worldwide now rely on Twitter as a communication platform. They will have to scale if they really want to be the 'Pulse of the Planet.'

Facebook issued an early statement on its site saying that, "Earlier this morning, Facebook encountered network issues related to an apparent distributed denial-of-service attack that resulted in degraded service for some users. No user data was at risk and we have restored full access to the site for most users. We're continuing to monitor the situation to ensure that users have the fast and reliable experience they've come to expect from Facebook." As compared to Twitter, Facebook and Google were able to minimize any impact to their sites along with sites such as Blogger, YouTube and other Google Sites.

Pingdom, a site that tracks server uptime, states that Twitter was offline for about two and a half hours. Last time, Twitter was down due to unplanned downtime was on May 30 this year due to a software error. Denial-of-service attacks are becoming common nowadays. According to Information week, Gawker Media sites and AT&T were hit with it earlier this week. Last week, Internet Systems Consortium warned that BIND 9, the most common domain name server, contained a vulnerability that could be exploited to crash the server, leading to a denial-of-service. The company said that the vulnerability is actively being exploited and it urged users of the software to update immediately.

Amongst all this commotion an interesting piece of news has emerged. A pro-Georgian blogger with accounts on Twitter, Facebook, LiveJournal and Google's Blogger and YouTube was targeted in a denial-of-service attack that led to the site-wide outage at Twitter and problems at the other sites, according to a Facebook executive. "It was a simultaneous attack across a number of properties targeting him to keep his voice from being heard. We're actively investigating the source of the attacks and we hope to be able to find out the individuals involved in the back end and to take action against them if we can," said Max Kelly, Chief Security Officer at Facebook to CNET. The blogger whose account was attacked uses the account name 'Cyxymu' (the name of a town in the Republic of Georgia). Kelly declined to speculate on whether Russian nationalists were behind the attack.

IITians now queue up for defense jobs

Call it an effect of sixth pay commission or recession. For the first time ever, 12 percent of the total recruitment at the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has been from the topnotch IITs of India. Every year, DRDO recruits 500 scientists for all of its 52 labs. This year, 60 of them have been from IITs.

In previous years, all the labs of the organization would manage to recruit one or two engineering graduates from the premier institutes. DRDO human resource officials told Times of India, "After the sixth Pay Commission, the pay, packages and promotion schemes were more streamlined and so was career growth. The scientists no longer have to wait for vacancies to get promotions. Plus, the allotment for awards for the scientists has increased to Rs 2 crore annually, double the allotment last year."

Sources said, "Seeing the economic scenario, IITians have flocked to the defence organization this year."

DRDO mainly recruits employees through a common scientist entry test and through campus recruitment across 40 campuses, IITs, central universities and others. The IITians were primarily recruited through the latter. The tag of IIT does not give any weightage in this recruitment process.

In another trend, 30 Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) were also recruited in 2008, of the 150 applicants. Most were to scientist D and E categories, some to science fields and engineering areas of R&D.

The DRDO also has the ROSSA scheme in place now. About 40 scientists, fresh PhD holders, were taken in under the 'registration of students with scholastic aptitudeï' scheme.

Even those who left DRDO for private sector are coming back. About 20 scientists are in line to be placed back.

Indians third highest online spenders in Asia Pacific

Undeterred by the slowdown, Indians continued to spend online in the last quarter of 2008 to emerge as the third highest spenders on the Internet in the Asia Pacific region, a report released Thursday by electronic payments giant VISA said.

The report said Indian online shoppers increased their purchases by 42 percent, or by about $1,000 per shopper to $3,450, compared to the $2,420 spent in the previous quarter.

This made them the third highest spenders in the Asia Pacific region in the last fiscal's last quarter, VISA said. Singapore with an online buy of $4,018 per shopper and Hong Kong with $3,791 topped the charts.

The survey was carried out among 9,142 Internet users aged between 18 to 49 years across six countries and territories from the Asia Pacific region.

Among the categories surveyed, all top three online spend areas were travel-related services.

According to the survey, the highest areas of spending in the past 12 months were airline tickets, which accounted for an average $970 per shopper annually. This was followed by online travel agents ($647) and travel accommodation ($527).

Said country manager of Visa South Asia Uttam Nayak: "Consumers are tuned to the convenience of shopping for travel services online."

The trend to shop online looks set to continue with 81 percent of respondents stating they were likely to shop online again in the next 12 months.

Koreans (96 percent), Japanese (90 percent) and Australians (83 percent) are most likely to make purchases again online, the survey said.

Microsoft to strip Internet Explorer browser

Microsoft is to strip its Internet Explorer browser from the new version of its Windows 7 operating system that it sells in Europe, the company announced Thursday.

Microsoft said the move was designed to meet criticism from European Union (EU) regulators who have launched an investigation into whether bundling the browser with the operating system is in breach of European anti-trust rules.

"Given the pending Microsoft to strip Internet Explorer browser from European Windows, we will offer it separately and on an easy-to-install basis to both computer manufacturers and users," Microsoft said in a statement.

"This means that computer manufacturers and users will be free to install Internet Explorer on Windows 7, or not, as they prefer."

Windows 7 is scheduled to be generally available Oct 22. Ironically, Microsoft is making the changes as rival firms like Firefox, Apple Safari and Google Chrome chip away at Internet Explorer's once unassailable lead.

Stephen Wolfram's search engine to take on Google

The inventor of one of the most widely used science programmes has given the most detailed demonstration yet of a new search engine that many experts predict could revolutionise the way information is used on the Internet.

Stephen Wolfram, whose Mathematical programme is widely used throughout the science world, gave the details of his new computational search engine, named Wolfram Alpha in an online presentation. The company says the technology will go public on May 18.

Unlike Google, which automatically indexes billions of web pages to answer users' search queries, Wolfram Alpha uses sophisticated algorithms to attempt to understand user questions, and then uses the resources stored in its expert-curated database to offer up answers and relevant information.

"The idea is to try and bring expert-level knowledge to everyone," said Wolfram.

The result is very different from Google, which primarily points users in the direction of web pages. Wolfram Alpha, in contrast, displays information that it calculates by itself and shows in useful formats, offering numerous options for users to dig deeper into the subject.

It can answer questions like how high is Mt Everest, what is the fish production in Italy, and what was the weather in London on the day John F Kennedy was killed. But because it relies on verified data in its system rather than an ad hoc search of the internet, there are big gaps in its knowledge, especially in pop culture and information that frequently changes, such as film showings.

"We are just at the beginning," said Wolfram, 49. "I think we've got a reasonable start on 90 percent of the shelves in a typical reference library."

Experts like Tom Simpson, on the blog Convergenceofeverything.com, said that rather than displacing Google, the new tool reflected the growing reach of emerging artificial intelligence and "a step towards a self-organising internet" that intuitively understands what users need from it.

Tech Mahindra becomes No. 4

Maimed and left gasping for a lifeline, Satyam Computer Services has finally found its new knight in shining armour, Tech Mahindra
(TechMa). The bidding process for the beleaguered software firm culminated on Monday with TechMa emerging as the highest bidder with an offer price of Rs 58 per share. TechMa's price outbid other suitors -engineering giant Larsen & Toubro and private equity player Wilbur Ross - by a comfortable margin.

L&T's bid of Rs 45.90 per share and Wilbur Ross' Rs 20, were not even within striking distance of TechMa's deal-winning bid.


At Rs 58 per share, Tech Mahindra will acquire a controlling stake of 51% in Satyam for Rs 2,889 crore, pegging the total value of the company at Rs 5,665 crore. In the first stage, Satyam will issue 30.27 crore shares to TechMa, representing 31% of the company's share capital, which will infuse Rs 1,756 crore into the company. In the second stage, TechMa will have to mandatorily make an open offer to Satyam's existing shareholders for another 20%.

However, L&T, which holds a 12% stake in Satyam, will not participate in the open offer for shareholders as it has a lock-in period of six months.

Predictably, both the TechMa and Satyam stocks were caught in a volatile vortex during the days trading. Soon after the Satyam board meet in the early part of the day, the Tech Mahindra scrip on BSE gained 25% to Rs 400. However, late profit-taking shaved off part of its early gains and the stock closed at Rs 349, up 12.3%. While the Satyam stock rallied 16.5% in intra-day trades, it closed at Rs 49, up a mere 3.6%. In mid-session trading, the Satyam ADR was down 15% at $2.25 on New York Stock Exchange.

The acquisition catapults TechMa into the fourth position in the pecking order of IT firms, after HCL Technologies.

However, inevitably, questions are being asked about the winning bid. Have the Mahindras over-valued Satyam, especially since distressed asset buyer Wilbur Ross priced its bid as low as Rs 20? Interestingly, Cognizant, which was to bid jointly with Wilbur Ross, decided to back off at the last minute. Some IT analysts have also described the deal as ``disastrous''.


Defending his bid price, TechMa chairman Anand Mahindra said: ``When you are running in a race, you don't look behind who's chasing you. We believe our bid is rightly priced.'' It is estimated that Satyam's liabilities could be as high as $1 billion. TechMa director Bharat Doshi said that the bid price was determined by the company after taking into account Satyam's liabilities.

Even though the auditors, Deloitte and KPMG, are still in the process of restating Satyam's accounts, a rough calculation of the company's financials was presented to the bidders. As per this calculation, Satyam's annual revenues are expected to decline from $1.8 bn to $1.3 bn. Satyam's operating margin is said to be around 3% vis-a-vis Tech Ma's 22%.

For TechMa, Satyam complements its business, with no client overlap. While the former is a strong player in telecom (75% of revenues), Satyam caters to financial services, manufacturing and healthcare, among others. ``It will require a fair amount of work to bring Satyam back to its past glory. It will be a challenge to make Satyam financially strong so as to retain clients,'' said Vineet Nayyar, TechMa vice chairman and CEO.
With Satyam having a large clientele of over 500 clients -some of them as large as GE, Cisco, Citi and General Motors -Mahindra said: ``I will personally reach out to John Chambers (chairman of Cisco), Vikram Pandit of Citi and Fritz Henderson (GM CEO) to restore confidence in Satyam and us.''


After 100 days of uncertainty, Satyam's acquisition dispels the anxiety of 48,000 Satyamites, ushering in a sense of positivity. The company's former chairman B Ramalinga Raju had, in January, revealed that he had manipulated the company's accounts to the extent of Rs 7,800 crore. He has been behind bars since then, awaiting trial.

Announcing the winning bid, Kiran Karnik, chairman of the government-appointed Satyam board, said: ``Today, we have reached a final culmination stage, and though there are a few steps more to go, what it marks is the end of uncertainty.''

The other logical question is: will TechMa retain the Satyam brand name, given the unwholesome ring it has acquired in the past five months? Meanwhile, Mahindra rubbished rumours that TechMa's strategic partner, British Telecom, did not support the Satyam bid. Incidentally, British Telecom is also TechMa's largest client.

Satyam still among top five IT firms in India

The official pointed out that Satyam continues to have strong revenues. The difference between its turnover and the next highest is around 10-15 per cent.

According to the available data, HCL Technologies, which was the fifth-largest IT firm before the scam-hit Satyam, recorded a revenue of Rs 4,860 crore in the July-December. So, 10-15 per cent less than HCL means Satyam's turnover is Rs 4,100-4,400 crore. At this turnover, Satyam's top line has dipped by only 1-7 percent compared with the year-ago period (July-December 2007).

Meanwhile, Tech Mahindra, which is looking to pick up stake in Satyam is a distant sixth, with a turnover of only Rs 2,297 crore in the six months ended December 2008.

After the government-nominated directors took control of the board of Satyam, two audit firms - KPMG and Deloitte - were asked to restate the accounts of the company. While the two audit firms are expected to take six months for the job, the companies that have evinced interest in picking up a stake in Satyam are being given restated accounts for six months ended December 2008.

However, the restated accounts are not available for January-March 2009, the critical period after Raju's confession and the government taking control of the company. The official said Satyam had performed well in January and February by operating without taking bank loans, adding that client churn rate was not abnormal.

India has largest number of Googlers outside the US

India is fast becoming Google’s delight. Google India has already become the second-largest operation for Google worldwide in terms of employee numbers. The Google operations in Gurgaon, Bangalore, Mumbai and Hyderabad put together, make for the highest number of Googlers outside the United States. India has also emerged as the highest growth market for Google in terms of advertising revenues.

Given the burgeoning size of the mobile users in India, Google is investing huge resources into the next leg of its research and development, focused at the Indian market. The emphasis is clearly on delivering services, especially pushing information, through mobile devices to the rapidly proliferating mobile population in the country.

“India is a very important part of our operations, globally. We have had a large engineering and operations presence through the R&D centre and global sales & support centres in India. But, the focus in the recent times has been to ramp up the market-facing capabilities for servicing the Indian market. This part is expected to clock the highest growth for Google India in the coming quarters,” said Google India Managing Director Shailesh Rao.

“A huge chunk of the Indian population is using mobile devices for data services – be it for short messaging or WAP application. The focus of our product development is to offer products and services for this set of users,” he added.

The Google team in India is also concentrating on developing non-Hindi and non-English capabilities for mobile device users. “We are looking at ways to provide information to users who are usually challenged with respect to access by providing transliteration capabilities while they are on the move, just as we have done for our online products.”

The idea is to make social networking and search friendly for the disparate Indian user profile by providing more Indic content.

Last year, dovetailing its development effort with the Indian requirements, Google extended the reach of its products to non-Hindi and non-English speakers by offering transliteration capability on blogger, search and also on Orkut.

“The strategic importance that Google attaches to its India operations is fairly obvious given that there are few countries that have the growth profile and the scale or the structural opportunity as is presented by this one country. It is the largest democracy where sharing of information is centre-stage. With the youth demographics of this country, everything is centered around knowledge and sharing of information. That is precisely the need that we are here to satiate,” said Rao.

Emotional distress due to social networking websites

There is a boom of social networking websites on Internet .The newer social networking sites like orkut , wayn, myspace not only helps in building social contacts but also gives other privileges like earning through blogging & uploading pictures .Majority of people who surf Internet frequently are members of at least one social networking websites either for fun , or to build contacts or for promotion of their own on line business or for earning through blogging . When it comes to earning through blogging , people spend several hours in a day to update their blogs & than on reading & commenting other blogger work. As a result of which blogger get very much acquainted with each others style of writing , thoughts ,likes , dislikes ,profession & other personal aspects & at times blogger get attracted to opposite sex blogger. Once this happens the blogger mind gets completely diverted from blogging . He or she starts giving very sensitive comments on the articles of the blogger with whom he or she has got attracted .The comments are very frequent & personalized a result both the blogger get attracted to one another. Recently I came across few cases where in male blogger first approached female blogger by giving frequent & touching comments on their articles & than they exchanged their contact numbers & email IDs.Later the male blogger shared their past with the female blogger & expressed how lonely they are without true love in their lives & eventually proposed the females saying that they can only bring the lost love back into their lives . Women feel very sorry for the past of males & they started loving the them thinking that the males are very honest & will be carrying husbands if they tie knot with them. For few months these couples continued their interaction through blogging & chatting & meanwhile they committed for marriage , without any face to face meetings. Since it was not a true love & was near attraction the male blogger got attracted to another female blogger & thereby they lost interest in the previous female blogger & the commitments which they made to them became meaningless. As usual the females got very upset , they lost hope , trust & health & now these woman do not believe in the Institution of marriage they do not want to get married for ever & are not ready to forget them although their dream homes are scattered totally According to me it is not wrong to love somebody & to express love for someone nor I say it is the folly of men alone .Also there might be people who got true life partners through social networking sites but I feel one should not commit for marriage without family consent & face to face interaction with the person whom you met through social networking websites.
